Joint agency and university project for digital future of news

The Press Association has teamed up with an arts university to launch a two-year digital development project.

Three graduates will work with PA and the University of the Arts London on the project’s three key areas – media futures, technology and journalism.

The trio will review current multimedia practices, research emerging technology and investigate how future developments with the affect PA and its customers.

Editor-in-chief Tony Watson said: “Just as PA has always been at the heart of traditional media, over the next few years we aim to ensure it is also at the centre of the digital landscape.

“This project demonstrates our commitment to meeting that objective.

“We are excited that University of the Arts London will be bringing their skills and expertise to our multimedia operation and look forward to a fruitful partnership together.”

The three graduates will begin work next month from the PA’s headquarters, in London.

It is hoped that the project will help PA introduce new methods for newsgathering, ensuring the best use of new technology.

Keith Bardon, the university’s pro rector of research, said: “University of the Arts London enjoys an international reputation for being at the very forefront of technological advances and using this unequalled in-house expertise to help businesses reach their full potential.

“The transfer of knowledge from the university to PA and the graduates is an important part of our mission to share the skills we have developed with world leading organisations and push the boundaries through innovation.”
