Invitation to the Blairs

The Western Daily Press has published a guide to the West of England for the Prime Minister and his family after it was reported they were considering a holiday in the area in a bid to boost tourism following the foot and mouth crisis.

In a full page feature entitled ‘Dear Tony, wish you were here?’ the paper’s Simon Steel said the West Country was ready to welcome the family with open arms, and listed a few good reasons they should visit the area.

He suggests that Tony Blair and his wife Cherie, “could share a stick of candy floss”, while their children enjoy a donkey ride on Weston-super-Mare beach, or that they visit some of the many attractions the area has to offer.

He said: “There are plenty of attractions to enjoy, from the ambitious Eden project in Cornwall to At-Bristol, or Weston-super-Mare’s award-winning Grand Pier.

“The West is also famous for great houses and unique sights such as Stonehenge and Cheddar Gorge.”

He also suggests that the family might like to stay at Butlins in Minehead, for a remarkably affordable £450 a week, or at Oak Over guesthouse in Weston, where for just £21 a night per person, the family could enjoy an en-suite bedroom and breakfast.

Malcolm Bell, chief executive of South West Tourism, said: “There’s no need for Mr Blair to go anywhere else to satisfy his needs.

“We’ve got great cities and tremendous resorts. It’s a cornucopia of the best of British holiday experiences.”
