High wire act for editor Terry

The daring editor of a Hertfordshire weekly paper dropped from the top of a local hospital to help raise money for charity.

Terry Mitchinson of the Archant-owned Welwyn and Hatfield Times joined 70 other high-flyers in raising more than £10,000 for the Hertfordshire Breast Unit Appeal.

After the slide from the ninth floor of Welwyn Garden City’s QE2 Hospital, Terry said: “It looked a lot higher up looking down, than it did looking up!”

The appeal’s organiser, Vicki Adkins, said: “I’d like to thank everyone very much for their bravery. The things people will do for a good cause is amazing.”

£628,000 has so far been raised for the appeal since it was launched five years ago.

The aim is to build a dedicated breast unit at the QE2 Hospital.

Vicki said: “There’s a great community spirit with this appeal. It has really taken off in the last year to 18 months and I think it will take off again when people see that we are going to build this.”

It is hoped that plans for the unit will be created by September.
