Headlines & deadlines in Newcastle

The Newcastle Chronicle and Journal’s education newsroom is launching Headlines & Deadlines 6, a new literacy resource pack for schoolchildren containing more than 40 activities.

It is matched to the requirements of the National Literacy Strategy, and the 64-page book has been compiled by Kay Thompson, the Newspapers in Education Co-ordinator with NC&J Ltd, Jane Sutton, literacy consultant with the local education authority and Jess Pearson, leading literacy teacher at Moorside Community Primary School.

Kay said: “This is the sixth publication in the Headlines & Deadlines series and we are very excited about its launch.

“The pack has been prepared in response to requests from teachers for a pack which brings a real life context to the non-fiction elements of the strategy for year 6 pupils.”

Thanks to funding from Northern Electric, Tyne & Wear Education Business Links Organisation and Northumberland Education Business Partnership, 8,000 year 6 pupils in Tyne and Wear and Northumberland schools will have the opportunity to develop their writing skills through completing the activities in the pack.

Topics covered include, writing, analysing and summarising reports, developing interview skills and audience awareness as well as identifying fact from opinion and writing a balanced report. There are also puzzles and fun activities in the book which have been designed to consolidate and develop areas of study.
