Guardian launches cancer care appeal

Readers of the Banbury Guardian are being urged to dig deep to ease the pain of cancer sufferers.

A new £80,000 appeal has been launched by the newspaper to pay for a third Macmillan nurse at Horton Hospital.

Around 50 per cent of cancer patients are treated by Macmillan nurses who have been trained to give specialist cancer treatment.

But what makes the nurses extra special is their expertise in palliative care.

This allows them to make the lives of terminal patients more comfortable.

Fundraising manager Anne Cooper from the Oxfordshire branch of Macmillan Cancer Relief, said: “A palliative care nurse is invaluable and can improve the quality of care of patients with cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

“Patients and families attending the Horton will benefit a lot from the support of the new nurse.”

The Guardian has suggested a range of events which readers can organise to raise money for the appeal.

These include auctions, wine tasting, foreign food evenings and quiz nights.

Alternatively, readers can simply donate cash, cheques and postal orders direct to the newspaper.
