Growing business and boosting profit – the answers

Key figures from the world of digital information will be sharing their knowledge at a major newspaper conference.

The Newspaper Society’s New Media Conference is aimed at people involved in the development of electronic media and e-commerce in the regional press.

It will explore ways to develop new business channels and how to generate more revenue.

Topics under discussion will include partnerships and affiliate deals, online classifieds and auctions, the “integrated newsroom”, content syndication, mobile technology, digital television and multiple distribution platforms.

The theme of the event, in York on June 18 and 19, is Harnessing Key Assets in the Digital Age.

Online initiatives in the regional press will be examined, including:

  • The benefits of community publishing, the lessons to be learnt and the issues to be aware of, with Helen Staniforth, of Northcliffe Electronic Publishing;
  • The Hull Daily Mail’s new digital TV service through a partnership with the local telecoms company – and what’s going to happen next;
  • How Isle of Man Newspapers is ensuring a return on online, looking at multiple revenue streams;
  • And find out what success the Hampshire Chronicle had made in getting the newspaper into e-book format, with editor Alan Cleaver.

    The main speakers include: Steve Wing, head of commercial development at Guardian Unlimited, who will talk about the national newspaper’s online strategy and how it sits with the offline brand; Clay Harris of FT.com, who will examine the single newsroom strategy and its effect on output and quality of editorial; James Bromley, from AdTrader (Guardian Media Group), who will outline his plans for keeping AdTrader a market leader in the online motors arena; Tony Blin-Stoyle from the local information provider, UpMyStreet, who will reveal how he built services for distribution via the web, digital television, wireless internet and print; Paul Witten, of eBay UK, who will explain how the online auction site has been profitable since its launch.

    Tom Stevenson, managing director of digital media and group operations at ECNG will chair the conference, which is sponsored by ABC electronic, Geac Publishing Systems and Shopcreator.
