Gazette offers reward

The Shields Gazette has put up a £1,500 reward to catch the killer of a homeless man who died on South Shields seafront.

Ex-soldier Richard Jones, (47), was battered to death a week ago.

Police say there has been a massive public response to the murder inquiry, and the Gazette hopes it reward will persuade people to contact police with information that will lead to the conviction of the killer.

Gazette editor Rob Lawson said: “South Tyneside is a friendly place, and that’s why Mr Jones decided to stay here for a few months while he travelled.

“But there is every chance that a murderer lives here, and we will not stand for that – we will do all we can to flush him out.

“I want our money to act as a foundation for borough businesses to build on, and I am asking company bosses to add to the reward which could help bring this person – or people – to justice.”
