Gannett hands over biggest-ever grant

The biggest single grant from the Gannett Foundation in Wales is paying for a new minibus for a community group.

The foundation is the charitable arm of Newsquest’s parent company Gannett, and makes a number of grants available each year.

Phoenix Community Transport, in Pontllanfraith, was given £28,500, which includes the cost of a ten-seater minibus for use by disabled people, VAT, and cash for marketing and painting of the rest of the 21-strong fleet.

This award was made through the South Wales Argus.

The Gannett Foundation was established in Britain five years ago years ago and all applications for grants are made through local Newsquest titles.

The grants are allocated twice a year, in March/April and again in December.

It is left to each local newspaper to establish its own priorities, depending on local needs and following guidelines laid down by the Gannett Foundation.

The Foundation supports projects which take a creative approach to fundamental issues such as education and neighbourhood developments, youth development, cultural enrichment and support for disadvantaged people.

More than £250,000 has been paid out across the country so far this year.
