From trainee reporters to editors

Two journalism students from Coombeshead College in Newton Abbot have had their first taste as working newspaper editors, on a Teignmouth school newspaper.

Christine Fullam and Emma Crome were invited to edit Newslink, the newspaper of Our Lady and St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Primary School.

The girls, who are both 17, are studying a journalism course at Coombeshead College, which is approved by the NCTJ and is backed by the Westcountry Publications Group.

The course, taught by Torquay Herald Express reporter Sue White, is the only one of its type in the country available to students from the age of 16, and the would-be journalists sit NCTJ exams which are normally taken by graduates.

Reflecting on her first experience as an editor, Christine said: “We decided to involve the children as much as possible. As budding young journalists, they were eager to assist us by doing their own reporting and writing their own articles.

“Editing the newspaper was an eye-opener for us as it was very time consuming, but really enjoyable.”
