Floods crisis could be solved by readers

A massive public consultation has been launched by the Shropshire Star to find a solution to the region’s flooding problem.

More than 30,000 homes in the Shrewsbury area are to get a survey form to give their views.

The idea is for householders and business people to add their view to work being done by the Government to find an answer.

Tony Blair, his deputy John Prescott, Environment Agency experts, councillors and council officials have already given their views on the crisis.

Now the Star wants to find out if ordinary people want millions of pounds of public money to be splashed out on a flood protection scheme, or if they wish to resist tampering with nature.

The questionnaires, which will be collected at the Shropshire Star office in Shrewsbury, will be delivered to Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council, which will make a final decision on flood defences.

Council spokeswoman Celia Bahrami told Star readers: “The Shropshire Star’s questionnaire will be very useful to us.

“The council welcomes public interest in the great floods debate and will definitely take the results into account.”
