Final chapter fornewsman Bill

A former chief sub with a passion for books has died, aged 88.

Bill Handover, who had worked for the Gloucestershire Echo and the Gloucester Citizen, passed away at the Sue Ryder Home at Leckhampton.

He began his journalism career in London after leaving school and then went on to work for a Liverpool newspaper.

After serving in the Second World War, Bill worked on the Gloucestershire Echo before transferring to the Citizen.

It was here that he spent the majority of his career, firstly as deputy chief sub and then as chief sub editor when his predecessor Ted Lacey retired.

Bill enjoyed nothing more than a good read and combined his subbing role with writing the paper’s book reviews.

After retiring in 1978, he was able to devote more time to his other great love, gardening.

Bill leaves a widow, Kathleen, to whom he was married to for more than 60 years.
