Feature Writer of the Year

As always, this category was hotly contested. Judge Jim Anderson, a Sunday Telegraph columnist and former managing editor of the Daily Star, said: “While so many feature writers seem to believe that the tape recorded transcripts of interviews make good reading, there were enough exceptions among the huge number of entrants where plenty of thought had been given to a careful crafting of words.”

Winner: Brendon Williams. At the time with the Western Mail but now with the Welsh Mirror, he “knows how to draw readers in and hold them through to the end of his splendidly-crafted articles”, Mr Anderson said. “Whether writing about the Manic Street Preachers or the painful subject of teenage suicides, he defies his readers to lift their eyes from the page until they have read every last word”.

Highly commended: David Powell (Daily Post) and Nick Dermody (Western Mail). Both were praised for their “excellent” work.
