Farewell to an Angel

One of the leading lights in The Northern Echo’s campaign to win recognition for unsung war heroes has died.

Maisie White, 92, was a former Aycliffe Angel, one of the women who spent the Second World War working in a munitions factory in County Durham making the bombs and bullets that helped defeat Hitler.

Fifty years on, through The Northern Echo’s Remember The Angels campaign, she spearheaded moves to gain national recognition for herself and thousands of fellow Home Front workers.

During the campaign, she met Tony Blair to tell him about the valuable efforts of those workers.

The Remember The Angels Campaign began after Northern Echo columnist Ruth Campbell highlighted the efforts of munitions workers, and the injustice they felt because of a lack of official recognition.

Letters from former Angels flooded in and the campaign helped achieve the recognition they deserved.
