"Fantastic" response to Battle of Britain special publications

The editor of the Kent and Sussex Courier has hailed as “fantastic” response to the newspaper’s special Battle of Britain publication.

The paper’s offices, in Tubridge Wells, have been inundated with calls from members of the public asking where they can get a copy of the glossy publication. One desperate reader even called from Australia to reserve one!

Editor Martin Oxley said: “The Battle of Britain has special significance around this area because the battle took place literally right above the Courier offices.”

The 36-page publication contains factual information about the battle along with readers’ own memories and reproduced cuttings from the 1940 Courier.

The tribute took five months to produce and includes a number of pieces written by members of the public who were more than happy to share their recollections of those dramatic days.

For Martin, one of the most interesting parts of producing the special edition was searching the archives for Courier reports on the events.

He said: “It was absolutely fascinating. It reminds me a little of the recent fuel crisis but on a larger scale. In the first few reports you get the impression that people weren’t overly concerned but over the following days it gets a lot more serious and you can sense the anxiety spreading. Then, when the fighting begins in the skies, people don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Copies of the Battle of Britain tribute will remain on sale with part of the proceeds being donated to RAF charities.
