'Fantastic' Journal named Regional Newspaper of the Year

The Journal, Newcastle, was named Regional Newspaper of the Year at the UK newspaper industry’s biggest gathering.

A record 900-plus industry executives, suppliers, sponsors and guests attended the 2000 Awards – recognising excellence in newspaper production – in the Great Room of The Grosvenor House in London’s Park Lane.

The Journal was hailed as “a massive package for a regional audience”.

Judges said it was “a superbly-produced, fantastic product”. The Journal and its sister paper, the Evening Chronicle, they said, was “a wonderful package from Trinity Mirror’s Newcastle stable”.

Shortlisted for the award were the East Anglian Daily Times, the Eastern Daily Press, the Evening Chronicle, the Guernsey Press and the Yorkshire Post.

Journal production manager Ian Sanderson received the award from TV personality Clvie Anderson.

Judges included Andrew Colter, production editor of the Jersey Evening Post; Richard Green, works and technical director of the Express & Star; and Bob McDougall, senior operations manager of Yorkshire Post Newspapers.
