Fans answered via web

Fans of Darlington Football Club have been given unique access to the club’s controversial chairman through an Internet initiative at The Northern Echo.

The chairman, multi-millionaire former safe-cracker George Reynolds, was placed in the firing line over the team’s performance and plans for a new stadium.

Reynolds agreed to the idea of an Ask George session at the website www.thisisthenortheast.co.uk.

Quakers fans e-mailed their questions to the site for publication then the chairman went through them to answer their points.

Head of electronic information services for Newsquest (NorthEast), Peter Chapman, said: “The initiative was promoted in the newspaper during the week and the results provided the sort of of grassroots response which newspapers often find difficult to solicit.

“The Northern Echo also carried a picture story recording the event alongside extracts from the Q&A session across half a broadsheet page.”

The number of page impressions and the amount of feedback from fans showed they appreciated the chance to air their views.
