Fairer sex take over at Echoto mark Women's Day

The female journalists at the Liverpool Echo celebrated International Womens’ Day by taking control of the paper.

News, sport and design decisions were all made by the paper’s female staff, most of whom were promoted for the day to make sure the special Echo edition was dedicated to women.

Head of the all-female team was Echo reader Linda Morgan, chosen from scores of female readers who applied to take up the role for the day.

The mother-of-three was ultimately responsible for the day’s paper, and chose the stories she believed to be most important to the people of Liverpool.

She said: “Even though it is International Women’s Day there are things that concern everybody and I think that sometimes women’s coverage makes out women are only interested in certain parts of the news but I am sure they are interested in politics and finance and all the things that men are interested in.”

To mark the day, the paper ran a series of special stories focusing on women, including a look at women caught up in the foot and mouth crisis and a feature on breast cancer.

Deputy news editor Val Woan took the position of news editor for the day, while sports reporter Claire Gray was promoted to sports editor, sub-editor Sandra Shennan became design editor and photographer Tracey O’Neill took control of the picture desk.
