Former Sheffield Star journalist Harold Martin has died aged 88.

Harold’s career in newspapers spanned more than 50 years, beginning at the Bristol Evening Post when he was 16.

In 1939 he joined the Sheffield Star as its film critic and entertainment writer.

He met and interviewed many of the superstars of day including Cary Grant, Dame Anna Neagle and Jessie Matthews.

But his career was interrupted by the war and he was called up into the army.

He was given a commission and was appointed Algiers editor of Union Jack, the North African army’s daily paper.

At the end of the war he returned to the Star as a sub editor, before joining Sheffield press agency Whites where he worked as a news and sports reporter.

Harold leaves a widow, Marjorie, a daughter Darlene, two grandchildren and one great grandchild.
