Ex-Echo girl turns to shopping and trekking

A former Exeter Express and Echo journalist will be trekking across Peru to raise money for the Breast Cancer Care charity.

Kara Baker, who is now a presenter for satellite and cable television shopping channel QVC, is undertaking the adventure with her boyfriend Nick to raise funds for the charity after her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer last year.

The couple’s strenuous 33km trek along the Inca Trail is taking place this month.

Already they have raised £4,000 for the charity which provides support for breast cancer patients and carers.

Kara said: “My mother had breast cancer and I saw what she had to go through. I felt very powerless at the time so I wanted to do something positive to help.

“I’m doing it so that others won’t have to experience the fear and pain my family has gone through.”

Kara has set up a special trek4charity.com where people can learn more about the trek and about how to make donations.

On the website, Kara said: “We all have a responsibility. If we all wake up and do something we really can change the world, maybe in a small way, but it grows.”

  • After gaining NCTJ qualifications, Kara has worked for several national and regional newspapers. Her television experience includes work for Westcountry television, The Weather Channel, CBTV and Mad About Shopping.
