Everybody needs good neighbours

Walter Samways is the perfect neighbour to Margaret Baldham.

Much of Lincolnshire knows that now because his good-neighbourliness has been recorded forever on the pages the Lincolnshire Echo.

The paper is running a series of articles to search for a star – the kind of people that make the county renowned for its friendly style.

Walter, 78, was the first example for the Echo’s Good Neighbour of the Year competition.

He collects the pension for wheelchair-user Mrs Baldham, 65, goes to the shops and generally helps her when she needs it. He’s been helping out since 1992 when she moved into the street.

And he’s always got a smile on his face – never down-in-the-mouth – according to Mrs Baldham.

Launching the search, the Echo told its readers: “If you live here, or even if you are just visiting, you will always be welcomed with a smile and a wave.

“Now we want you to tell us about the friendly faces who live and work in our community.

“The Lincolnshire Echo prides itself on highlighting everything that is good about our area, which is why we want to hear about your good neighbours.”
