Evening Post to auction historic stadium floodlights

The Bristol Evening Post is auctioning one of the original stadium floodlights from the former Bristol Rovers ground at Eastville Stadium in aid of its One In Four Cancer Campaign.

The piece of footballing history was on the last pylon of lights left standing when Rovers left the ground in 1986, which is now the site of the Ikea furniture store.

Three of the four pylons were demolished to build the store and the last was left standing close to the M32 as a symbolic reminder of the old stadium. But earlier this year that pylon was pulled down for safety reasons.

Rob Stokes, managing editor of the Post, said: “This is a marvellous opportunity to bid for a piece of Eastville history and to help this really important cause at the same time.”

The One In Four Campaign has been running for several months and has raised more than £42,000.

It has only achieved this goal through the generosity of local people and businesses who have given their money and time in aid of the appeal.

The Post has spent the money on a number of things, including DVD players for wards, counselling sessions and scanning couches, all of which were on two wish lists of items needed.

  • To bid for the light, write to: Sarah Key, Health Correspondent, Bristol Evening Post, Temple Way, Bristol BS99 7HD. Bids close at midnight on May 26.
