Evening News revamps business offering to attract new readers

The Cambridge Evening News has revamped its weekly business pull-out in a bid to attract a new, broader base of readers.

Editor Murray Morse has decided to ditch the traditional pink paper and together with a redesign has introduced a new Your Money section highlighting the latest products and news in the world of personal finance.

The relaunch issue was doubled in size to 16 pages to accommodate the extra advertising it generated.

Dropping the pink paper also means the section can be a run-of-paper section, putting an end to pre-printing and inserting and allowing the live daily business page and share prices to be incorporated into the pull-out.

  • Murray said: “The redesign and new content have given the section real impact again. Previously we felt that many people were put off by the pink paper thinking it was only for people in business and were ignoring it.

“The new personal finance section appeals to everyone, not just businessmen and women. Nowadays people are regularly changing mortgages or credit cards and we wanted to reflect this.

“We will be including a table of best buys every week to allow people to easily find out the best offers.

“We have TV’s Dragon’s Den star Doug Richard writing a regular column, while we also have investment tips, plus all the other news and views from the local movers and shakers.”

  • The pull-out is edited by Jenny Chapman, Britain’s Regional Business and Financial Writer of the Year, and deputy editor James Foster and assistant editor Peter Jeffrey also worked on the revamp.

The pull-out will become a regular 12 pages every Tuesday, compared with the previous eight, with personal finance becoming a double page spread.

The News’ daily business pages have also been revamped to complement the weekly pull-out, with the emphasis on lots more news stories that are presented with impact.
