Evening News records the big event

The Manchester Evening News is producing the official record of the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Throughout the games, one of the biggest events to ever hit Manchester, the paper is producing a series of supplements detailing every event and medal.

The Evening News has editorial control of each of the 24-page Games 2002 supplements and has two shifts of staff working on them from around six in the morning until midnight.

Between 150,000 and 160,000 copies of the supplement are being produced each day and given out with the day’s paper, giving a record of the previous 24 hours.

By the end of the games the paper will have produced 13 supplements, two in the run-up to the event and 11 during the games, with the final one providing coverage of the closing ceremony.

The Evening News is also printing a separate publication called the Village Voice, for the 6,000 athletes taking part, and its website ManchesterOnline is carrying the latest news and information from the games to a worldwide audience.

This includes video interviews, online questionnaires, 360 degree tours of the venues as well as information on public transport and accommodation for visitors.

ManchesterOnline content editor Sarah Hartley said: “The whole city is buzzing with the games and ManchesterOnline is reflecting that.

“We have held polls for readers, received e-mails from around the world and altered the look of our home page to make the coverage more dominant.

“We have also benefited from around the clock publishing by the MEN as well as ManchesterOnline journalists.

“Although its early days as far as stats go, we have noticed a considerable increase in page impressions which are currently running at well over 2.2m a month and have also kept our newsletter subscribers up-to-date on the highlights of the games.

“The Commonwealth Games have been a remarkable achievement for the city and I am very proud to have played a small part in helping to take the Games and the city to a world wide audience.”

  • The Guardian Media Group, parent company of the Manchester Evening News, is the official media sponsor of Manchester’s Commonwealth Games.

They are the largest ever, with athletes from 72 nations competing in 17 sporting events between July 25 and August 4.
