Echo voices concerns over freed paedophile

The Exeter Express & Echo has voiced concerns after a convicted paedophile was freed from prison despite admitting that he may reoffend.

Martin Todd, who has already been jailed for sexual assaults on two young boys, appeared in court after failing to comply with the Sex Offenders’ Register by moving to Exeter from Plymouth without telling police.

Judge Jeremy Griggs sentenced the 34-year-old to two months in jail – but he was immediately released because of time he had spent on remand, despite having told probation officers he may offend again.

Following his decision, Judge Griggs has turned down a request by the Echo to discuss the sentence given, and said he could only deal with the convicted paedophile for the offence in front of the court.

The police and city council have also refused to discuss the case with the Echo.

When Martin was set free he was placed on the council’s priority housing waiting list, but the authority refuses say what type of accomodation he is currently in or what steps are being taken to to ensure he doesn’t impose a risk to his new neighbours.

Editor Steve Hall said: “We’ve been given blanket assurances.

“We don’t accept them and we’re concerned. We think the people of Exeter will be concerned too.”
