Don Hale recruits Joe Cocker for Shakers aid

Rock star Joe Cocker is coming to the aid of Bury FC – with the help of Matlock Mercury editor Don Hale.

Don, a former player with Bury FC – who are nicknamed the Shakers – has released a previously unheard recording of Cocker.

The unique CD contains the story of the young Cocker and songs from when heperformed under the name Vance Arnold and the Avengers.

The recording was made by his first manager and mentor Terry Thornton live on stage during 1963 at Sheffield’s Esquire Club using a reel to reel tape.

The recording has lain dormant and forgotten, despite Joe’s immense success and the much sought-after package is priced at £7.

Don said: “I have given a number of copies of my two books, Down Wembley Way, and Vance Arnold and the Avengers (Joe Cocker) to Bury FC to help their survival funds.

“As a former player they have invited me to be one of the guests of honour at the forthcoming home tie with Manchester United – where Man Utd’s new multi-million pound signings are expected to make their debuts.

“The game will be played at Gigg Lane on August 8 and I have also been asked to write a special nostalgia piece for the commemorative programme. A couple of pictures will be used from my playing days including the team photo of season 1968/69 when Bury were in the old Second Division.”
