Digital newsroom dossier claims bosses 'let journalists down'

A long-awaited report from the National Union of Journalists about the future of integrated digital newsrooms is being published today.

It claims employers are putting quality journalism under threat by failing to put sufficient investment into the journalists who staff their multi-media newsrooms.

A Commission on Multimedia Working, comprising seven members, was set up at the union’s annual delegate meeting in April.

Their report contains 30 recommendations which cover pay, working conditions, jobs and standards of journalism as print and the internet converge in newsrooms.

It welcomes the possibilities offered by the internet and media convergence, highlighting their potential to engage new audiences in lively and high quality journalism.

But it also finds that many journalists are worried about the impact they will have on their professional standards.

The report includes numerous examples provided by journalists dealing with these technologies everyday.

Trends include demands to produce more content for more outlets without the provision of any extra journalistic resources, which is often felt to have a detrimental effect on quality.

In recent months the NUJ has campaigned for more pay where local newspaper reporters are taking on extra digital duties.

The group conducted a wide survey of NUJ members and interviewed reporters in all sectors of the media.

The NUJ has also received criticism from some quarters over its attitude to new media, accusing it of being stuck in the past.

General secretary Jeremy Dear said: “They will be surprised by the report.

“What is clear is that new technology isn’t to blame. The faultline is with its appropriation by short-sighted media employers.

“Instead of seizing the opportunity to enhance journalistic content and build and maintain quality media, many simply seize the opportunity to reduce costs and boost profits, viewing the erosion of quality journalism as a necessary sacrifice.

“We are unashamedly in favour of new media where it enhances good journalism and unashamedly opposed to moves which undermine it.”
