Daily Press searches for castaway couple

The Western Daily Press has begun a search for a castaway couple who would like to spend a year living in isolation on a tiny island.

The paper has teamed up with the hotel group Von Essen to offer a daring couple their very own adventure on Thorne Island, off the Welsh coast.

The firm wants a couple to act as caretakers of the windswept outcrop, with only the birds for company, for a year before building starts on a five-star hotel.

The hotel group plans to transform the island into a luxury holiday hideaway, and the chosen castaway couple will be expected to guard the island against marauding birds.

They will live in the island’s small backpackers’ hotel, equipped with gas bottles and running water, and will need fishing, DIY and survival skills.

The paper’s search has already proved popular, with many couples from across the West attracted by the prospect of its glorious isolation.

Among the hopefuls are 55-year-olds Kenneth White and Marie Innerd.

Kenneth said: “I have already done some survival training so I have the skills, and as a couple we get on very well and I think that is important.

“We are looking to get away from it all. Our families are all grown up and we no longer have any responsibilities. It would be great to be on an island alone and at one with nature.”
