Courier angle on disaster

The Concorde air disaster touched the lives of Kent and Sussex Courier readers – when they were presented with a four-page in-depth special.

The reason? It was to feature the remarkable escape of local woman Alice Brooking, who cheated death when she leapt from an upstairs window of the hotel which was flattened in the crash.

With the headline “It’s definitely a miracle”, the paper splashed with the now familiar photo of Alice holding up her injured left hand.

Page one featured her press conference interview, with Page two offering interviews with her family, speaking of their worry and relief.

A feature spread on pages four and five looked at the media spotlight Alice found herself under, as well as interviews with trauma experts, staff at her old school and former students.

The Courier, with eight editions, covers west Kent and East Sussex, has an average weekly sale of 41,647.

Alice is from Hildenborough, a village which straddles the old road from London to Tonbridge, and featured prominently in the Tunbridge Wells edition.
