Composing room trainer Fred has died

A man who was an integral part of the history of the Lincolnshire Echo for more than 30 years has died.

Fred Couling (85) joined the firm in 1950 and spent his working life in the composing room in the old building in St Benedict Square until he retired in 1980.

Paul Hellings, the pre-press manager at the Lincolnshire Echo, who was trained by Fred, said: “He was most meticulous in his training and was a very good teacher.

“You never heard Fred say a harsh word about anyone. He was always thinking of others and enjoyed the buzz that he got from helping others.”
