Chronicle headline is double Dutch

It is not often newspapers are proud of printing double Dutch.

But when The Bath Chronicle wanted to report the gratitude of a group from Holland for the city’s wartime generosity, that is exactly what the paper did.

Veel bedankt – “thank you” in Dutch – was the headline to a front page story about a return visit by a group of men and women who had been looked after as children in Bath in 1945.

A group of 50 children suffering from malnutrition travelled to the city at the end of the Second World War and stayed with families who helped them to recuperate.

And to mark 60 years since Bath came to their aid 25 of the group returned to the city for a three-day trip during which they attended a reception with the Mayor of Bath, a tour around the Roman Baths and a dinner at the pavilion in Royal Victoria Park.

The Chronicle – which 60 years ago had played its own part in publicising the unique international relief effort – also devoted three pages to the visit by the group from Bath’s twin town of Alkmaar.
