Police are praising readers of the Mansfield Chad after an appeal in the the paper led to two arrests following a shop theft at Sutton-in-Ashfield.

Phone calls, many anonymous, were made to detectives after the Chad published images taken by surveillance cameras.

Inquiries are also under way to trace two other people in connection with the crime.

Sgt Richard Stones said: “It’s been a big success and we’re very grateful to everybody who called us with information.”

He urged people to continue to be public-spirited in a bid to gain more back-up evidence in that, and other cases.

Sutton police had released CCTV footage of the thefts and due to the success of the move police are planning to release more pictures within the next month.
