  • The Centre for Journalism at Leeds Trinity University College, Leeds, enjoys a well-deserved reputation, both among news organisations and in academic circles.

The Centre harnesses the skills and knowledge of media professionals and academics to support a full range of journalism courses – from undergraduate schemes through vocational postgraduate programmes to masters and doctoral research.

The ‘jewel in the crown’ of the Centre is undoubtedly the Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism, specialising in Broadcast (radio and television) and Radio, both accredited by the BJTC, or Print, accredited by the NCTJ, In January 2009 a Postgraduate Diploma in Magazine Journalism was introduced and accreditation by the NCTJ is to be applied for.

These Postgraduate Diplomas in Journalism are specifically designed to equip people to find work in the industry. They are highly vocational, involving circa 42 weeks – from the end of January to the end of November each year – of intensive education and training in the knowledge and skills essential to professional journalism practice.

Much of the tuition is workshop-based in our professionally equipped print, magazine, TV and radio newsrooms. Diploma trainees work at all times with professional journalists.

Those on the Print course produce their own weekly newspaper and website, the North Leeds News, while the Magazine trainees put their skills into practice through the production of the newspaper supplement and website MORE. Radio and Broadcast trainees produce radio news bulletins for Bradford Community Broadcasting and Broadcast trainees produce a TV news magazine.

All trainees undertake a period of at least 4 weeks of work placements with news organisations.

Upon successful completion of the postgraduate diploma trainees may progress to the Master of Arts in Journalism by undertaking a piece of substantive independent research relevant to journalism.
