WMN nears double campaign success

The Western Morning News has reached a milestone with one campaign and is counting down to the climax of another.

More than 100,000 people have signed the paper’s petition to save rural post offices. The six-figure barrier was smashed after just eight weeks of campaigning.

Like several regional dailies, the WMN is fighting to save post offices threatened by Government plans to pay benefits directly into bank accounts.

On the same day that it announced the news, the paper urged readers to carry its Fuel for the Lifeboats Fund to its target.

Launched to mark the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s 175th anniversary, the appeal aims to provide a year’s fuel for vessels operating from the region’s 25 lifeboat station.

Readers have donated a “magnificent” £33,315 but the paper has set itself just four weeks to hit the £40,000 target.
