Twelve years after the East Anglian Daily Times launched a campaign for improvements to be made to a “death-trap” junction, a £5.5m safety scheme has been announced.

Following a public inquiry, the Highways Agency announced the allocation of funds to improve Rookery crossroads on the A14 at Rougham, near Bury St Edmonds.

The junction has been the scene of 69 accidents in the past five years, which have resulted in 18 people being killed or seriously injured.

Work is due to start next spring with completion of the scheme due in 2005.

Sara Mildmay-White, who represents the village on St Edmundsbury Borough Council, said: “This is absolutely excellent news. The scheme is going to be a lifesaver – there are no two ways about it.”
