Tolls plan hits a nerve

A campaign to stop VAT being charged on Tamar Bridge tolls has captured the imagination of Western Morning News readers.

Hundreds have written in voicing their support, with coupons printed in the paper being sent back by the sackload.

The campaign is backed by MPs from all parties, as well as business leaders and local politicians, who are all condemning the proposed tax.

The change could come about after a top European official ruled that the bridge was not only the only viable route across the river – which would open the door to tax being charged.

The paper explained how Advocate General Siegbert Alber said a single-lane 15th-century bridge at Gunnislake represented a comparable alternative.

All the coupons collected by the WMN will be handed to the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Committee. They will then be forwarded to Strasbourg ahead of a decision to be made by the European Court of Justice on September 12.
