Telegraph drive to ensure children Stay Safe

The Scunthorpe Telegraph is publishing a week-long series of articles highlighting dangerous local areas of which children and parents should be aware.

The Stay Safe campaign is trying to raise awareness to arm parents and children with the knowledge to make the right decisions regarding their safety during the summer holidays.

The campaign hopes to make children more aware of the dangers in places that may upon first sight look like a fun area to play.

It follows cases such as that of Stephen and Lisa Fewster, whose 12-year-old son Sam was killed in a tragic accident at a local industrial estate on his way to McDonald’s with a friend.

Telegraph editor Jon Grubb said: “Many children do not understand about the hidden dangers of playing in such areas.

“Sadly over the years the Telegraph has reported a number of tragic deaths involving children in particular, playing at places such as Ashby Ville and Dragonby ponds. We should do everything to avoid tragedies like this happening.”

Along with articles highlighting local danger spots, the Telegraph plans to publish a four-page full-colour pullout aimed at youngsters featuring advice with quizzes, competitions and prizes.
