A newspaper campaign to preserve a historic market is claiming successafter the council agreed to let it open three days a week.
Traders were celebrating at the news, which follows a concerted push fromthe Ipswich Star to save the market and move it to a prime site in the towncentre.
Campaigners had been told that legal problems were preventing a move butmore than 3,000 people came out in support of the idea in an Evening Starpetition – and impending council elections may have helped nudge thedecision through.
Editor Nigel Pickover said: “The decision represents a major climbdownfor Ipswich council.
“It’s one forced on the borough by the strength of public opinion in thetown – channelled through the Evening Star’s Save Ipswich Marketcampaign.
“Traders held out for permission to operate on the market three days aweek- and the council’s executive gave them the go-ahead for that.”
Council planners are due to make a decision shortly but the idea looksset to get through all the relevant committees.
