Safety message driven home

The success of a campaign to encourage children to wear cycle helmets has resulted in schools throughout a city running a pilot scheme to hammer the message home.

Derby is one of three areas in Britain that will show the 12-minute video from the Bicycle Helmet Trust.

The pilot safety scheme comes after the Derby Telegraph launched a Cycle Helmets Save Lives Campaign after an ambulance flying squad medic was called to three fatal road accidents in a month that involved cyclists not wearing helmets.

The aim of the new video is to get young cyclists, parents and teachers to realise the devastating effects of head injuries.

It will be distributed to all primary and secondary schools through Derby City Council’s road safety unit.

By 2002 the trust hopes to have reduced the number of young cyclists requiring hospital treatment for head injuries by a third.
