Reading scheme gets top marks

A regional campaign backed by the Yorkshire Evening Post, aimed at boosting literary skills among primary school children, has won national recognition.

Right to Read, which was founded by the charitable organisation Business in the Community, has been presented with an Impact Endorsement Mark.

The mark is given as part of Business in the Community’s Awards for Excellence and is recognition of the measurable impact the initiative has had on society.

The award was presented to former Yorkshire Water managing director and Right to Read co-founder Jonson Cox at a ceremony at the Department of Trade and Industry in London.

Right to Read chief executive Deborah Law said: “This is marvellous recognition for Right to Read.

“We have gone from strength to strength since we started in 1999 and what was initially a regional scheme for Yorkshire and the Humber has now been copied in London and other regions are developing as we speak.”

  • More than 3,000 people have signed up as reading volunteers, who are going out to schools helping children who have problems reading.
