Readers praise rail campaign

Readers’ letters have flooded in to the Belfast Telegraph, praising the paper’s Save Our Railways campaign.

They also accused the Government of years of neglect of Northern Ireland railways, following the Telegraph’s revelation that the future of the entire network was in doubt.

The paper launched its hard-hitting campaign after the Northern Ireland office responded to news that £183m was needed to “preserve essential safety levels” by saying the cash was not available and questioning the network’s viability.

As well as reporting the views of politicians, transport experts, consumer groups and the public, the paper sent a reporter to Scotland to compare the modern rail network in Northern Ireland Office minister Adam Ingram’s constituency with that in Ulster, which suffers from years of underinvestment.

There is now to be a hearing into the state of the Ulster network by a Commons Select Committee.
