Punch fight taken overseas

A supporter of the East Anglian Daily Times’ campaign to save the endangered Suffolk Punch breed of heavy horse has added hundreds of signatures to the petition – from her holiday in the Caribbean.

Jo Fox had already collected 450 signatures from residents in and around Felixstowe.

She is a volunteer who has worked with Suffolk Punches for three years.

And she decided to take her fight to safeguard the breed’s future to the other side of the world.

She said: “I went all over the place to get signatures and then I took a petition on holiday with me. Some of the locals signed it, and some people from America, as well as London and places closer to home.

“I don’t think they realise the breed is in such a bad state until you explain to people that there are only 300 left and put it against the fact that there are about 2,000 rare pandas.”

The Daily Times launched the Save the Suffolk Punch campaign when news emerged that the renowned stud farm at Hollesley Bay Prison could be closed by the Home Office.
