Preserving railway heritage

A centenary newspaper supplement from 75 years ago is being recreated for a 175th anniversary of railway heritage.

The facsimile edition of The Northern Echo’s Railway Centenary Supplement, which originally sold for one shilling, is now on sale at £6.99.

It has been reproduced in the same A3 format as the original, and contains everything that appeared in the version from 75 years ago, including the full colour front cover.

There are features, a history of the railways and even then adverts that appeared in the original.

The launch coincides with the Echo’s Treasuring Our Railway Heritage campaign, which is aiming to highlight and preserve the region’s history as the birthplace of the railway industry.

Northern Echo editor Peter Barron said: “This commemorative facsimile edition is part of that campaign.

“It was first published in 1925 to celebrate the centenary of the opening of the Stockton to Darlington Railway and is a remarkable record of our heritage.”
