Post staff train toStart-a-Heart

Evening Post staff have led by example and learned how to use life-saving defibrillator equipment at their Nottingham offices.

The paper’s Start-a-Heart campaign has raised enough cash in only one month to buy two more defibrillators for the community – as well as the one for its offices at Castle Wharf.

Editor Graham Glen said: “The response from the public to the appeal so far has been tremendous. Their willingness to help clearly demonstrates heart disease affects many lives in Nottinghamshire.

“We are proud to be leading the campaign, supported by St John Ambulance, but decided that we as a company could also contribute directly to it by purchasing a defibrillator ourselves.

“We hope other employers in the city consider following suit.”

The Post device was installed after the company’s first aiders were taught how to use it. Security staff will also be trained so it is available around-the-clock.

Nine Post employees were trained how to use it by St John Ambulance staff in a four-hour course this week.

Reporter David Lowe, a qualified first-aider, said: “Using a defibrillator was much easier than I first thought.

“The course showed us how lives can be saved with this simple-to-use machine.”

The defibrillators bought with readers’ money will be sited at two busy locations, chosen with the help of medical experts and East Midlands Ambulance Service.
