Manchester United star Paul Scholes has spoken out in support of the Great Barr Observer’s Asthma Aid campaign, revealing how he copes as a sufferer of the condition.

The newspaper is currently trying to increase awareness about asthma, and as part of a feature looking at how sport and exercise can help sufferers, the footballer told how after being diagnosed at the age of 21, he has not let it affect his career.

He told the paper: “I take a preventer inhaler daily and a reliever inhaler prior to training and matches.

“Viral infections can trigger my asthma, but also cold air, especially in the winter – that’s why it’s important for me to take the necessary preventative measures before training and football matches.

“I always loved sport especially football when I was growing up and the important thing is that there are no restrictions.

“Just because you have asthma it doesn’t mean you have to give up what you love doing.”

The Observer is also asking readers to help raise £20,000 to fund the first specialist asthma nurse for North Birmingham by supporting its campaign on May 6 – World Asthma Day – by organising their own fundraising events.
