Parking problems highlighted

A controversial car parking scheme has been given an overwhelming thumbs-down by the people of Scarborough.

The Evening News gave residents the chance to have their say on new restrictions that have come into force.

More than 4,100 readers cast their vote and more than 90 per cent were against the new scheme.

The Evening News has dubbed the issue as one of the biggest in the town for years.

And the results, which came by post, the Internet and telephone, are now being sent to Scarborough Council.

Cllr Godfrey Allanson, chairman of the council’s environmental health and control committee, said in the paper after the result was revealed: “The Scarborough Evening News survey merely confirms what we already knew, that people have concerns about the new parking scheme.”

Traders’ associations are up in arms over the new measures, which means many streets are now pay-and-display.

Those outside the main area have limited waiting of two or three hours, depending on location.

Residents can buy a permit to give free parking near their homes and there are other permits for businesses and hotel guests.
