The Southend Echo’s campaign to save the town’s cancer services has been met with widespread support from the community.
Proposals were unveiled by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence – an NHS think-thank – to move some specialist services away from the town.
This was because the health authority may not have a large enough catchment to justify the services, officials speculating over the future of cancer services claimed.
But the Echo, backed by hospital experts, politicians and patients, has spearheaded a campaign to save the unit’s specialist facilities.
A special House of Commons debate was heard on the issue but the outcome of the proposals – which are still at a draft stage – is not yet known.
