Paper prompts £1bn pay-out for sick miners

Energy minister Brian Wilson has revealed that £1bn has been paid out to sick and dying ex-miners since the South Wales Argus launched its Justice for Miners campaign three years ago.

He praised the Argus’ campaign, which has called for quicker compensation claims for former miners crippled by chest diseases contracted while working underground.

Marking the third anniversary of the campaign, the minister said: “The Argus has campaigned hard to ensure that the government meets our commitment of compensating every single miner who is eligible.

“I respect and welcome that campaign.

“A public spotlight helps to concentrate minds. It was in the Argus that I first pledged to make 50,000 full and final lung disease offers by the end of this year – 15,000 of which will be in Wales. We remain on track to meet this commitment.

“We will soon pass the £1bn mark UK-wide and £189m has been paid so far in Wales.

“The Argus and I share a commitment – to ensure that every valid claim is met in full and as quickly as possible.”
