A petition boasting more than 2,000 signatures is now at Downing Streetbegging the Government to improve access to NHS dentistry.

The petition, from readers of the Yeovil Express, was delivered byeditor-in-chief Ken Bird, accompanied by chief reporter Steve Sowden and MPDavid Laws, who has been leading the campaign.

The Express, along with the Chard and Ilminster News, teamed up with theMP in October when it was revealed no dentists in the area were taking onnew adult patients, and the nearest NHS practices were at least 15 milesaway.

Ken Bird said: “Although our petition has been a big success, it willonly achieve its real goal when the dentistry crisis in the South Somersetarea is finally resolved.”

The paper said many people were being forced into a more expensiveprivate option because they had no choice.

The petition was put together from forms published in the paper, whichreaders filled in and returned.
