New honour for Herald hero

A Tamworth war hero is to have a bench dedicated to his memory at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas.

It is the latest in a long line of tributes to Colin Grazier – a hotel, streets, a commemorative plate and a special recipe of beer already bear his name..

The bench was paid for by an anonymous group of trustees who read about the Herald’s Enigma campaign and war hero Grazier, who is credited with shortening the Second World War by up to a year.

A brass plaque on the bench will also honour Tony Fasson and Tommy Brown, who together with Grazier rescued vital Enigma codes from a German submarine.

Herald deputy editor Phil Shanahan, who is chairman of the Colin Grazier Memorial Committee said: “This is yet another lasting tribute to these brave men whose exceptional courage had never been adequately recognized until our campaign began.

“I would really like to thank these thoughtful people for their generous donation.

“When they visit the arboretum once the bench has been erected, I’m sure they will think that their money has been put to good use.”
