New Harry memorial is thanks to the Post

Swansea-born entertainer Harry Secombe is to have a memorial plaque in his home city thanks to the South Wales Evening Post.

Sir Harry died two years ago and there has been a public outcry in Swansea over the lack of a suitable memorial for him in the city.

The Post took up the campaign – and within 48 hours managed to secure a deal which will see a plaque put up outside the council house where Sir Harry was born in the St Thomas area of the city in 1921.

Post features writer Abigail Hart got in touch with the Heritage Foundation which is responsible for putting up landmark blue signs on the former homes of the rich and famous.

It readily agreed to put one up this summer -paid for by the Evening Post – outside Sir Harry’s former home.

The Post acted after a plaque in memory of Sir Harry was put up outside the Opera House theatre in Manchester.

When the newspaper announced the move it was inundated with complaints that nothing had been done in his home city.

There has been talk of naming a street or new building after him, or putting up a statue or plaque in his memory but nothing has been agreed.

Sir Harry’s family is delighted at the move.

His brother Fred said: “It’s great he will be remembered in this way.”

The plaque is expected to be unveiled in July.
